NAR's Code of Ethics, first adopted in 1913, was one of the first codifications of ethical duties adopted by any business group. The Code ensures that consumers are served by requiring REALTORS® to cooperate with each other in furthering clients' best interests.
The Preamble to the Code establishes the aspirational foundation for the ethical principles valued by REALTORS®. It encompasses essential concepts such as honesty, integrity, fairness, and moral conduct within business relationships. The concluding section references the enduring and universal principle of the Golden Rule.
The Preamble expresses ideals and is subjective, so it cannot be used for disciplinary action against a REALTOR®. Discipline relies solely on the Articles of the Code.
The REALTOR® Organization provides a cost-effective way for members and clients to resolve ethics complaints or arbitration requests out of court. Additionally, the organization provides resources such as the Ombuds program and Mediation services.
